river of hope
artist-in-residence // Devon, UK, 2021-22
Coordinated by the Thames Festival Trust, River of Hope pairs artists up with nearby schools to deliver day long workshops exploring their local river through the arts and making. I worked with 5 secondary schools in South Devon, based along the River Dart, showing students how to process locally dug wild clays (including clay from the Dart) and make their own botanical inks and pigments from foraged materials and food waste. In some of the schools these inks were used to create environmental protest art, campaigning for the rights of the river. In others, we worked with the clay to create contemporary river guardians, to protect or forewarn.
In each school, the students' work was then brought together into one final collaborative design, which was then printed as a giant silk flag, to be paraded and displayed in London as part of the Queen's Jubilee. Given the monarchy's colonial legacy, its role in industrialisation and the subsequent enduring impacts on the climate and the Global South, the workshops and materials also became a space for students to express their responses to this, with many choosing to insert covert messages and demands - through the use of abstraction, surrealism and symbolism - into their final pieces.

Trabajé con 5 escuelas secundarias en el sur de Devon, ubicadas a lo largo del río Dart, mostrando a los estudiantes cómo procesar barros excavados localmente (incluida el barro del Dart) y hacer sus propias tintas y pigmentos botánicos a partir de materiales forrajeros y desechos de alimentos. En cada escuela, el trabajo de los estudiantes se reunió en un diseño colaborativo final, que luego se imprimió como una bandera de seda gigante, para desfilar y exhibir en Londres como parte del Jubileo de la Reina. Dado el legado colonial de la monarquía, su papel en la industrialización y los posteriores impactos duraderos en el clima y el Sur Global, los talleres y materiales también se convirtieron en un espacio para que los estudiantes expresaran sus respuestas a esto, y muchos optaron por insertar mensajes y demandas encubiertas - mediante el uso de la abstracción, el surrealismo y el simbolismo - en sus piezas finales.
